The clinical efficacy of functional knee bracing in patients who underwent anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction is not established, hence the role of knee bracing in ACL reconstructions is controversial.
Does functional bracing reduce the risk of subsequent knee injury in skiers with previous ACL reconstruction?
Subjects: 820 skiers who had an ACL reconstruction >2 years ago.
Experimental procedure: Subjects were identified during pre-season knee screening (documenting variables including age, sex, ski occupation, Lachman grade, pivot-shift grade, KT-1000 arthrometer manual maximum displacement) at a ski resort. 257 skiers (Brace group) selected the use of functional knee brace during skiing while 563 skier-employees with ACL reconstruction did not use bracing (No Brace group). Subsequent knee injuries were identified using workers compensation records.
Measures of outcome: Incidence of knee injury (injuries/100 knees/ski season) and risk factors for subsequent knee injury
