Open versus closed kinetic chain exercises for patellar chondromalacia

This study investigated and compared the effect of two different training programmes to treat patients with patellar chondromalacia. The authors initiated an intervention by applying two types of quadriceps muscle exercise therapy programmes. They measured the Q angle, isometric force of knee extensor muscles, pain threshold, crepitation and thigh circumference to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of the programmes. The results demonstrated that Q angle, patellofemoral joint pain and crepitation were more reduced in the semi-squat group than the straight leg raise (SLR) group. Furthermore, knee isometric force and thigh circumference were more increased in the semi-squat group than the SLR group. The authors concluded that semi-squat exercise was more effective than SLR exercise. The authors based their study on the lack of general agreement about the effectiveness of the two therapy plans and lack of knowledge in this field.
