Circuit weight training and cardiac morphology: a trial with magnetic resonance imaging

This study sheds further light on whether the pressure load associated with moderate resistance exercise has an impact on cardiac structure and function. It has been a long-held belief that resistance exercise induces left ventricular hypertrophy but this is predominantly based on findings from studies of high-intensity training. In fact, recent trials have found the acute haemodynamic response to comparable intensities of aerobic and resistance exercise to be similar. The finding of maintained cardiac morphology in the present study supports the notion that resistance training at a moderate intensity does not cause left ventricular remodelling in the short to medium term.
