Strong Diabetes

      Abstract

      We report the case of a 36-year-old male professional body builder. He presented to the A&E with right upper quadrant pain. This was on the background of a 15-year history of anabolic steroid and growth hormone abuse. Examination revealed mild hepatomegaly and a random blood sugar of 30.2. There was no evidence of ketonuria or acidosis. He had biochemical evidence of hepatitis and was found to be in acute renal failure. He was commenced on a sliding scale of insulin and intravenous infusion of crystalloid. The hepatitis and hyperglycaemia settled with conservative therapy. We believe we have reported the first case of frank diabetes precipitated by supra-physiological recreational GH abuse.
