      Abstract

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common neurological disorder associated with ageing, and has a global prevalence of 6% in people over the age of 65.1 It is also the most common cause of dementia, accounting for 50-60% of all cases.2 The increase in life expectancy of the world population is expected to translate into many more cases of dementia – it is estimated that 1 in 85 persons worldwide will be affected by AD in 2050.3 Clearly Alzheimer’s disease is a major public health problem.
