Occasional piece: On the value of team medical staff - can the 'Moneyball' approach be applied to injuries in professional football?

    Abstract

Statistical analysis of professional football (soccer) is leading to the conclusion that the team medical staff may be substantially undervalued in the market. Statistically, a player's value is a product of his 'skill' and 'durability' (percentage of games he is available to play). The team medical staff is probably more relevant to the second factor than is realised.
