2021, Drug and Alcohol DependenceAssociation of opioid misuse with anxiety and depression: A systematic review of the literature
2021, Clinical Psychology ReviewCitation Excerpt :Although few of these studies included a non-opioid-using control group, population prevalence estimates were compared to those of the general population. Of the studies reviewed, six examined prevalence among individuals who use opioids (Brooner, King, Kidorf, Schmidt, & Bigelow, 1997; Darke et al., 1994; Darke & Ross, 1997; Kosten & Rounsaville, 1986; Kosten, Rounsaville, & Kleber, 1985; Maddux, Desmond, & Costello, 1987). Although assessment methodology (i.e., self-report vs. clinical interview) varied across studies, each indicated elevated (compared to the general population estimates) rates of anxiety and depressive disorders among opioid users.
