Michael Cullen is currently employed as a consultant in sport and exercise medicine at Musgrave Park Hospital in Belfast and holds the position of visiting professor in sport and exercise medicine at the University of Ulster, as well as being external examiner in sport and exercise medicine to the Universities of Nottingham and Glasgow.

Michael was chairperson of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine (2002–2005) and has been President of the Irish Sports Medicine Association. He was elected a Foundation Fellow of the Irish Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine in 2002 and a Fellow of the Institute of Sports Medicine (London) in 2003.

He is married to Mary and has three children: Emma (19 years) and twins Sarah and Tony (17 years).

He was medical adviser to the Irish Football Association between 1984 and 2001, and, during this time, he was team doctor to the Northern Ireland senior international soccer team, attending a total of 97 international matches. He has represented Northern Ireland at soccer to amateur international level. His current sporting activity is limited to playing very average golf.
