Abstract
Objective: We present a simple system (Activity Point System, APS) to assign activity points for overweight and obese adults. Activity points are accumulated per week in amounts consistent with physical activity recommendations for health promotion and chronic disease prevention.
Methods: Activity points are derived from kilocalorie energy expenditures for 60 common activities and calculated for ten minute bouts of activity. Points take into account an individual's body weight and BMI and are stratified by body mass index (BMI) for overweight (25.0-29.9 kg/m2), obese (30.0-39.9 kg/m2), and extreme obesity (≥40.0 kg/m2) and by body weight (≤90 kg; >90 kg). Patients are encouraged to accumulate from 100 to 300 points per week of physical activity with points recorded in a journal or log.
Conclusion: Health care providers can use this simple, yet accurate chart to give exercise prescriptions for overweight and obese patients. The chart can be computerized to track patients' activity status and used to motivate patients to adopt and maintain a regular physical activity program.
