Surprisingly few epidemiological studies have been published and no prospective studies have been reported. This paper reviews the literature and provides a detailed breakdown of injuries in Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland for 1992–2000. The introduction of protective equipment is discussed and evidence for its effectiveness put forward.
