  1. Acclimatise athletes gradually. Provide graduated activity sessions for the initial 10–14 days.

  1. Know both the temperature and the humidity and reduce/modify activity when both are high. Use the wet bulb globe temperature as a guide.

  1. Provide frequent rest breaks and actively promote hydration.

  1. Educate healthcare providers, coaches, and others to observe for signs of heat illness. Circulate a written emergency plan.

  1. Be prepared to rapidly lower core body temperature (eg, large plastic outdoor swim pool filled with ice water).

  1. Wear light-weight and light-coloured clothing. Wear only one layer.
