Imaging of the Achilles Tendon
Section snippets
Summary
The Achilles tendon is the most commonly injured tendon in the foot and ankle; injuries commonly are related to sports/athletic activities. Imaging modalities that are used most commonly in the diagnostic assessment of the Achilles tendon include conventional radiography, ultrasonography, and MRI. Imaging plays an important role in the documentation and staging of diseases of the Achilles tendon, and provides a noninvasive means of assessing the tendon's response to therapy or progression of

It provides detailed anatomic and 3-D information regarding the amount of degeneration/damage present in the distal Achilles tendon.32–34 In general, sonography and MRI may provide similar information for patients with chronic Achilles tendinopathy.35
